After decades of the Biscayne Bay suffering from irregular times of high salinity and periods of freshwater inundation, we are pleased to announce a great victory in Everglades restoration efforts. On Tuesday, August 22, 2023, the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands S-709 Pump Station was opened with a ribbon cutting ceremony.

The purpose of the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands Project is to rehydrate coastal wetlands and reduce damaging point-source freshwater discharge to Biscayne Bay and Biscayne National Park. The S-709 pump station is one of five like it in the Biscayne Bay Coastal Wetlands Project and part of the many elements of the Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan.

This accomplishment has been made possible by collaborations between the US Army Corp of Engineers and South Florida Water Management District. As the great list of Everglades Restoration projects continue to be planned and constructed, we get to celebrate the constant stream of accomplishments that bring improvement to our waters daily.
