Florida Keys residents descended on Tallahassee this year for the annual Florida Keys Days on March 19, 2019. “Influencers” from Key Largo to Key West convened to remind the Legislature that Monroe County matters. Representatives from FIRM, the real estate market, Chambers of Commerce, the County Commissioners, and the municipalities carried a unified message to the Governor.
Mark Gregg, Florida Bay Forever board member, represented our interests and reported back that the entire contingent of Keys folks were on board with getting the water right. Governor Ron DeSantis is not wavering on his commitment to clean water, asking for an unprecedented amount of funding from the legislature. The outcome of the Governor’s wishes will be decided in the legislative session and while optimism is in the air, we will wait and see what comes out in the details.
The idea for a Florida Keys Day was hatched during a Leadership Monroe session 10 years ago. What started out as a small group trekking to the capital, has turned into a polished and streamlined affair. Socials with a Keys flair are arranged in the State House courtyard. Meet and greets with key political figures are scheduled and the opportunity for connections abound.
Thanks to Mark Gregg for making the effort to carry the message.
