Captain Steve Friedman, Florida Bay Forever Board Member, fishing guide, and dedicated family man has thrown his hat into the political ring to run for House of Representative Seat for District #120. Florida Bay Forever offers him a hearty round of applause for putting his money where his mouth is.
Captain Steve Friedman has been guiding in the Florida Key for the past 20 years. He has spent a lifetime educating folks about the value of natural resources. His ‘classroom’ has been his fishing boat. He draws connections between a vibrant coastal habitat and a robust economy, a thriving community, and a resilient population.
Captain Steve has a vested interest in his community as he and his wife, Kristine, work and raise their family in the Florida Keys. Their kids attend public school and participate in swimming, baseball, and cricket. Like every parent, Steve wants the best for his children and wants a future they can look forward to.
Since the Florida Bay seagrass die-off in 2015, Steve has taken on a leadership role in leading his professional colleagues and local community in the fight to advance Everglades Restoration. His passion for the environment plunged him into politics. He hasn’t looked back since.
His convictions about the Everglades match his convictions about the state of politics in Florida. He has watched the political process for the past 18 years of his Florida Keys residence. He identifies our current political system as one that compromises public education, is driven by special interests, and jeopardizes the very people who make our community thrive by allowing housing and food insecurities to be a daily fact of life.
Captain Steve believes it is time for a change.
Having spent summers as a youth volunteering with the Amigos de las Americas program, in Paraguay, Ecuador and Mexico, working to establish basic resources like sanitation, water supply and medical services, Captain Steve was inspired to pursue his college and graduate degrees in this subject area.
He attended Drake University in Iowa, majoring in Spanish and Latin American Studies. He went on to pursue a master’s degree in Latin American Studies with an emphasis on Community and Regional Planning from the University of New Mexico.
Steve’s education, combined with his instinct to serve the needs of a community, yield a candidate who can represent District 120 with honesty and integrity. He is an every-man who is will listen to his constituents and represent that voice in Tallahassee.
