Forums and Candidates

Public Forums

It’s hard to say whether candidate forums help anyone better connect with the candidates. The events are usually great opportunities for incumbents and hopefuls to hone their sound bites. It is virtually impossible to dig in to issues with a 2-3 minute time slot to answer questions.

Nonetheless, if you want to hear candidates go face to face, or meet candidates in person check out these local events:

October 8, 2018 Andrew Gillum visits Key West 9:00am Higgs Beach: Come out to this informal gathering in Key West to hear what this Democratic candidate for Governor has to say.

October 17, 2018 BPW Political Forum 5:30pm - 8:00pm Whale Harbor Marina : This popular BPW fundraiser draws almost all candidates and is known for its thoughtful preparation of questions.

Gillum and DeSantis are in a heated battle for the governors race. While Gillum is ahead in the polls by a slight margin, he faces ongoing rumors that he is under criminal investigation for conduct during his mayoral tenure in Tallahassee. DeSantis finds his campaign in disarray forcing him to reassign campaign duties late in the game to a new manager. One debate is scheduled and it could be worth watching.

October 24, 2018 Gillum DeSantis Debate While not a Monroe County event, it will be worth it to tune in to this event to finalize any misgivings about either candidate.

Governor Rick Scott and Senator Bill Nelson will answer questions in their first debate. Scott will be in the hot seat as he tries to explain away coastline degradation and Nelson will try to defend his “inaction” during his years in office.

October 2, 2018 Scott and Nelson go head to head on this Telemundo broadcast
